The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

ESOS applies to large UK undertakings. An organisation qualifies if it employs 250 or more people, or has an annual turnover above £44 million and a balance sheet total above £38 million. Organisations that meet the staff threshold qualify regardless of turnover.

Who Qualifies for ESOS?

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment scheme for large organisations operating in the UK.

An organisation qualifies for ESOS if, on the qualification date, it meets one or more of the following criteria:

Employs 250 or more people
Has an annual turnover exceeding £44 million and a balance sheet total exceeding £38 million
Is part of a corporate group that meets the qualification criteria

Qualifying organisations are required to assess their energy use and identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. Failure to comply can result in significant financial penalties and reputational risk.

How Do You Comply with ESOS?

Complying with ESOS involves assessing your organisation's total energy consumption across buildings, industrial processes and transport activities. To meet compliance requirements, organisations must:

Calculate their total energy consumption.

Identify areas that account for at least 90% of energy use.

Conduct energy assessments or audits on significant energy consumption.

Identify cost-effective energy-saving opportunities.

Prepare an ESOS evidence pack documenting all findings and assessment reports.

Obtain director-level approval of the assessment findings.

Submit a notification of compliance to the Environment Agency before the compliance deadline.
